By now almost everyone knows that most water supplies can not be completely trusted to be safe to drink. Of course, water treatment facilities remove as many contaminates as possible, but that still does not mean that all contaminates are completely removed or that it can not be contaminated at some point after it has left the facility from damages to pipelines or flooding. When home owners use well water, they run the same risk of their water supply being contaminated as well. Below is a list of the many things that can be in the water your family drinks.

The first and perhaps least dangerous of contaminates in a lot of water are things like calcium and magnesium. These minerals make water hard and are not deadly, but can wreak havoc with your plumbing and water using appliances. It can cause hard water stains to your tubs, sinks, and toilets. It can also make your skin dry and itchy as well as dull your hair and make it lifeless. Usually well water users suffer these problems the most. Hard water might not be hazardous, but it can cause home repair costs and be very annoying to deal with. Getting a water softener or additive can help with that, but it won't solve more serious problems.

If just the thought of fecal matter in your water turns your stomach to mush, then you should know that if E-coli or Coliforms are found in your water, fecal matter could be the source. Although these are not nearly the only bacteria that can contaminate drinking water, they are among the most serious because they can cause anything from mild intestinal issues to death in some people depending on the severity. Disinfection will remove most of the bacteria, but sometimes some of them do survive and they can actually live inside your plumbing pipes once they are in there.

Although the long term affects of this next issue is not fully known, it can not be good. When people take drugs, and we know there are a lot of various drugs consumed in this country alone every single day, those drugs are discarded in human waste and flushed down the toilet. Even water treatment facilities admit that not all of the drugs are removed during water treatment, but the amounts are supposed to be very small at this point. The point is however, how long will it take before there are so many drugs like antibiotics, sex hormones, mood stabilizers and even more simple things like Ibuprofin and aspirin, that become so present that they do cause problems?
